Chemistry is the study of atoms and how they combine. It provides students with a modern understanding of matter and its interactions. It focuses on investigating the physical and chemical properties of substances, chemical processes and the interaction of energy and matter. It attempts to explain and predict events at the atomic and molecular level.
Additionally, this course recognises that a study of the nature of materials includes natural and made substances and their environmental importance. Key to this is an understanding of the history and philosophy of science as it relates to the development of the understanding and manipulation of chemical systems.
