Our Year 10 Drama students have been introduced to Commedia dell' Arte which was an early form of theatre that originated in Italy during the 16th century. Performances were based on a basic plot and the actors improvised their dialogue. Each performance was tailored to the audience. This approach allowed for commentary on current politics and some humour that would otherwise have been censored. Most characters wore masks and each character demonstrated characteristic speech, gestures, props and costume.
Watch our students' first attempt to demonstrate their understanding of the characters and their techniques.
