Science

Science is mandatory for all students from Year 7 to Year 10.

Science 7-10 provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real-world problems. Science emphasises the skills for working scientifically, as well as critical and creative thinking to address scientific issues.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Environmental Science
  • Investigating Science
  • Physics.

In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.

Science Curriculum

Year 7-10 (Stage 4 and 5)

The course provides an opportunity for students to explore and understand the world around them based on both experiences and theory. Students are encouraged to develop their enquiry skills and apply their understanding to solving problems in a scientific manner.

The Science faculty is committed to providing opportunities for students to have hands on experiences that develop their conceptual understanding of real world phenomena and understand the value of Science in their world.

Courses

All courses focus on the development of student understanding of the world around them. The topics in years 7 – 10 build on student understanding. Early topics build on fundamental concrete concepts which are expanded and become more abstract. Where appropriate, they rely on the use of practical work, technology and research.

Year 7
  • The Chemical World
  • The Living World
  • May The Force Be With You
  • The Earth and Space
Year 8
  • Useful Chemistry
  • Staying Alive
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Resources Revolution
Year 9
  • Living Systems
  • The Danger Zone
  • Chemical Combinations
  • Waves and Motion
Year 10
  • Australian Electricity
  • Atomic world
  • IRP ( Individual Research Project)
  • The Genetic Code
  • Astronomy

To foster a deeper understanding of the application of the concepts being taught, we organise excursions /incursions

Year 7 - Reptile show visit and Jenolan Caves excursion.

Year 8 - Penrith lakes environmental centre.

Year 9 – Questacon Science museum, Canberra.

Year 10 – Australian Museum Science Festival.

   .

Year 11-12 (Stage 6)

The faculty offers the following courses in years 11-12:

  • Biology.
  • Chemistry.
  • Physics.
  • Senior Science (Yr 12 only 2018)
  • Investigating Science (from 2018)

   .

Each course is a Board developed and contributes towards the award of a HSC and ATAR.  Students may count up to 3 courses towards their ATAR.

Additional Activities

In addition to regular course work, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities to broaden their experience and improve their understanding. The activities include:

  • Aurecon Bridge building competition.
  • UNSW engineering challenge.
  • RACI Titration competition.
  • ICAS science competition.
  • Great engineering challenge
  • SIS University partnership
