The prefect body of Birrong Girls embodies the school's 'ad astra' culture and exemplifies the school's values of personal excellence, integrity, respect, responsibility, cooperation and understanding, tolerance and inclusion. As student ambassadors, prefects have a strong leadership role and are involved in school governance through representation on equity and finance teams and various committees.
Prefect selection involves a rigorous process. Student nominations are based on commitment to all aspects of school life, capacity to work individually and as part of a team, and the ability to balance the role of office with academic demands. Twelve students are elected by students and staff to the offices of School Captain, Vice Captain, Sports Captain and prefect.
A significant aspect of the prefect role involves community service. An aspect of this has involved fundraising for the school and designated charities. In past years, prefects have raised funds for Cancer Council, World's Greatest Shave, Breast Councer Foundation and Bear Cottage.
Prefects are also responsbile for organising events such as the Year 12 formal and assist in the organisation of presentation days and special ceremonies. As ambassadors, they represent the school at public functions including International Women's Day events and participate in local and state government intiatives.
The office prefect opens many different opportunities to students and develops leadership capacity.
