International Women's Day (IWD) is a holiday celebrated annually on the 8th of March as a focal point in the women's rights movement. IWD gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
Every year, a new theme for IWD is chosen. In 2025, the theme is #AccelerateAction for gender equality.
At Birrong Girls High School, we are passionate advocates for women's rights and will be celebrating by wearing purple ribbon. Purple was chosen as the official colour for the International Women's Day as it signifies strength, power, loyalty, justice, and dignity. Additionally, ribbons with purple, green and white stripes are also used to symbolise women's equality.
